Governor's Golf and Hike Day on Highland Green a Success

July 16, 2004

TOPSHAM, Maine Governor John E. Baldacci was among the special guests at the recent Governor’s Golf and Hike Day on Highland Green. The event was designed to provide special guests and residents with a sneak preview of Highland Green’s new Scottish-style course and series of hiking trails located on the Cathance River Watershed and Preserve.

Speakers at the event included Topsham resident and golf writer Jim Dodson, who served as a design consultant for the course. Also speaking were course architect Tom Emery of Land Use Consultants; Rick Wilson, executive director of the Cathance River Educational Alliance; Highland Green owner John Wasileski and Governor John Baldacci.

“The story of how Highland Green has worked with area-citizens and Highland Green residents to preserve open space should serve as an example of how development and the environment can co-exist. The balance truly represents ‘the way life should be,’ ” said Governor Baldacci.

Highland Green Golf Club will be open for play beginning July 31st. The club is offering free golf, by reservation, through the end of August. Please call 866-GOLF-TEE to make your tee time.

“It’s a shot-maker’s course,” said design consultant and golf writer Jim Dodson. “You have to think your way around this course and may want to leave the driver in the bag on some holes. The conditioning is superb. The course architect and crew have done an outstanding job.”

The hiking trails located at Highland Green, which wind through the Cathance River Preserve and Watershed will officially open to the public on August 28th. Highland Green residents have become a driving force in an environmental education organization called the Cathance River Educational Alliance (CREA).

CREA’s mission is to encourage and sponsor environmental, historical and cultural appreciation and enjoyment of the Cathance River watershed. Trail construction and developing environmental curricula and education resources for area students are among their top priorities.

“As a native of Topsham I can tell you that having this open space preserved – and these beautiful hiking trails – is enormous asset to the area,” said CREA executive director Rick Wilson. “It’s been a labor of love for a lot of us and we couldn’t have done it without owner John Wasileski, Highland Green residents and volunteers from the community.”
