Highland Green Again Named One of “America’s Best”

October 3, 2007 - Highland Green Adult Resort Community and Golf Club - a 650-acre active adult resort community situated in mid-coast Maine - has once again been named one of America's 100-Best Master Planned Communities by Where to Retire Magazine. Highland Green has received the bi-annual award twice in a row and is the first ever community in Maine to receive the award.
"It's certainly a feather in our cap and a validation of the path we've taken," said Highland Green owner and developer John Wasileski. "Dedicating two-thirds of our 650-acre campus to open space, following SmartGrowth and environmentally sustainable principles, supporting our local charities, co-founding the Cathance River Education Alliance and bringing the amenities including the Community Center and Golf Clubhouse and Pub are my proudest accomplishments."
"Through a rigorous selection process, we looked for neighborhoods that contribute to a well-rounded lifestyle," said Karen Northridge, Publisher for Where to Retire Magazine. "We are pleased to note that Highland Green is one of the best. Its nature preserve and Ecology Center, its hiking trails, golf amenities and community center offer residents opportunities to develop life-long interests and find new and stimulating pursuits. We offer sincere congratulations to the community for its inclusion in Where to Retire magazine's top 100."
While the amenities available to Highland Green residents are second to none, the appeal of Highland Green is a little different for every resident. For some it is the ability to participate in numerous activities and events that include everything from a regular bridge club to the Portland Symphony Orchestra.
Others are drawn to Highland Green because of its convenient access to nearby cultural opportunities including Bowdoin College arts, athletics and academics; Maine State Music Theatre and downtown Brunswick's charming restaurants and boutiques. For Ruth Ann Specht of Massachusetts, it's all of the above, but especially having a nature preserve out their back door.
"We decided to live in Highland Green because of the opportunity to build a custom designed, quality constructed home in an attractive setting - only steps away to a nature preseve, golf course and miles of woodland trails," said Ruth Ann Specht, who moved to Highland Green with her husband Walt from the Boston area.
