Cathance River

river

The Cathance River (a native American name meaning "Crooked River") originates in hilly terrain in Litchfield and meanders in a southern direction to Bradley Pond in Topsham before flowing east/northeast into Merrymeeting Bay.

Bordered by steep ledge in several areas, the river features a series of rapids that create a 100 foot elevation drop as the river passes through the Highland Green nature preserve. The river supports wide assortment of wildlife; including northern river otter, beaver, muskrat and red fox. Birds of prey including bald eagle and great blue heron benefit from the brown trout and Pumpkinseed sunfish, among others.

Be sure to visit our Photo Gallery to view wildlife at Highland Green.
