The 230-acre Cathance River Nature Preserve is an important part of the fabric and philosophy of the Highland Green community and was established through a compromise achieved by owner John Wasileski and a citizens' group called Topsham's Future.
Bordered by the pristine Cathance River on the north, the preserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife and features seven miles of well-groomed hiking trails that wind through sections of old-growth forest, around a 35-acre heath known as the "bird sanctuary," and alongside the scenic Cathance River.
Be sure to stop by the Ecology Center, located at the Beaver Loop trailhead, before or after your hike. Trail maps are available at several information kiosks.
